The Future Of Coastal Construction
I read a very interesting short article today from one of the Realtor publications. It stated that there has been approximately 6 Billion Dollars in insurance claims from the swatting of the Florida coastline from our recent Hurricane Mathew. A good portion of that damage resulted from the storm surge that accompanied Mathew. Anyone that has seen the dramatic footage of the surge, not only in Florida but all along the path of the hurricane as it continued northward along the US coastline, knows exactly what the damage looked like.
Although the article was short it pointed out two important thoughts. Damage such as storm surge is very hard to control and what can be done to help protect the construction along coastlines. The first point is very hard to address. We have seen in the past that Levees do not work and even if they did, building one along a whole coastline is not feasible. So the second point is where we should concern ourselves. The article states that a possible future of building along a coastline would be the use of Floating Homes.
It seems that several areas have already started this type of building and it has worked out very well. Maybe it is time for the East Coast to catch up.
