I moved to the Davenport area in 2013, after spending almost 60 years of my life in Miami-Dade County. My first 27 years of life was in the same home that my Grandparents had built by hand.

Throughout those 60 years I watched the CHANGE. The homes built back before I was born, as well as those built up until the 80s, were sturdily constructed and withstood many powerful Hurricanes. The homes were far enough apart that, unless your windows were open, you wouldn't be able to hear your neighbor's TV. My grandparents's home was built on a good size lot, 75x150, as were all the homes back then. Most of the neighbors knew each other and would help whenever needed.

But then Miami grew into a big City. With its big city problems. More housing was needed. As the developers kept moving south and west Miami and Miami-Dade County grew. As the farmland and the Everglades were pushed further out the spaces between the homes also shrunk. The by the 90's the term "0" Lot Line was in use in almost every development.  One wall of a new home would be the property line of that home.  As the homes crowded together, the neighbors seemed to drift further apart. It was no longer such a neighborly atmosphere as when I had grown up.

When I retired, I decided I wanted a change of scenery. I didn't want the crowded atmosphere of a big city anymore. Davenport has offered us the right amount of open space, neighborly atmosphere and good weather. I am no longer fearing each approaching June wondering if the next "Hurricane Andrew" will be that year. I know that we are not totally safe here in Davenport, but it will never be that rush of storm coming off the Ocean at full blast. The home may not have as much room between them as they did when I was young, but they are almost all made with double paned windows. No noise there!

My wife and I are very happy with the choice we made. Thank you Davenport.

For those others of you Retirees out there that are seeking quiet refuge from the masses, I highly suggest finding a home in Davenport, Florida.
